Texans Show Promise As They Defeat The Niners

(Sarah Dakheel / SportsEyez.com Photographer)

Being as it is just pre-season football, I will try to keep my praise in perspective.

Saturday the Texans convincingly handled the 49ers to a 20-9 victory in Houston. Matt Schaub went 11 for 14 for 128 yards and a touchdown late in the 2nd quarter. Arian Foster and the Texans' running game was stagnant until the second half.

San Francisco's offense seemed to hit a wall every time they came on the field. Managing only three field goals, Jim Harbaugh's offense definitely needs to be more proactive in the red zone. That seemed to be the problem for them last season as well, so if they want to make it back to the promise land, they cannot settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. That's not a good precedence to set and will catch up to them by December if the Niners do not fix it.

(Sarah Dakheel / SportsEyez.com Photographer)
The most exciting play of the game came from Texans' Punt / Kick Returner Trindan Holliday in the 4th quarter when he took an   87-yard punt return to the house for the second Texans' touchdown of the game. Holliday is making a strong case for himself to make this team with two touchdowns to his credit thus far this pre-season. Third year man from LSU, Holliday has been cemented to the Texans' practice squad and injured reserve list. So if Trindan continues to produce touchdowns, he will force Head Coach Gary Kubiak to make Holliday the Texans' first ever Punt / Kick Returner Specialist that doesn't have another function or job on the team.

Houston and San Francisco both have work to do and since they both are division champs, they both will have harder schedules this year and the kinks will have to be worked out before week one

Texans Thrash Cats, Now Look To The Ravens

It seemed as though the hardest game this weekend to handicap wasn't even close as the Texans thumped the Bengals 31-10. Arian Foster ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback T.J. Yates had a decent game, throwing for 159 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers.

The game was gridlocked the entire first half with no team able to gain a solid advantage. That was until Texans Defensive End J.J. Watt came up with a huge interception at the line of scrimmage and returned it for a touchdown to take the lead 17-10 right before halftime. The Texans' defense stayed aggressive as they prevented the Bengals offense from scoring any points in the second half.

Texans' captain and Wide Receiver Andre Johnson looked in All-Pro form, catching five receptions for 90 yards and his first career playoff touchdown for the nine year veteran.

Houston won a good game against an on-the-rise playoff team. That being said, they still have even bigger games ahead before they can play for the Lombardi Trophy at Indianapolis. The Texans are playing great defense and they shook some rust of their passing attack, but they will need to keep that up if they wish to play for a Super Bowl title as the competition only gets harder from here.

Houston will take on the 2nd seeded Ravens in Baltimore next Sunday, January 15th, at 12:00pm.

Are The Houston Texans A Dirty Team?

SportsRadio 610 afternoon host Josh Innes broke the story Sunday evening regarding recent NFL player comments that the Houston Texans' players are "dirty". Jacksonville's Terrance Knighton and Jeremy Mincey spoke to Innes on how some of the Texans offensive linemen play dirty and always have. This of course was after the Texans beat the Jaguars 20-13 that afternoon in Houston.

My question to all this is where were all these "dirty play" allegations when the Texans were losing? I mean come on, the Texans' offensive zone cut blocking scheme has been used there since 2006 and they're all of a sudden now playing dirty? All this is is a couple players that have sour grapes about a team that is on the rise and because they themselves are on a team that is now in the gutter. We probably wouldn't be hearing about this if A: the Texans weren't in 1st place in the AFC South, and B: if the accusers were not on a 2-6 football team.

You can tune into Josh Innes Monday through Friday 2pm - 7pm on SportsRadio 610am in Houston or on Radio.com online or on their mobile app.

Texans Ink Johnathan Joseph To A Five-Year Deal

(AP Photo)

I usually don't write a lot of columns or editorials, but when the Houston Texans signed cornerback Johnathan Joseph to a five-year deal worth $48.7 million, including $23.5 milllion guaranteed with a $12.5 million signing bonus, I had to chime in with my opinion.

Early on it was evident when free agency started that the Texans would make a big push for help in their secondary, after finishing last in pass defense in 2010. And even though Houston made an aggressive push for 4 time All-Pro Nnamdi Asomugha, it was Joseph that signed the deal first. Now I am not going to try and say that Joseph is better than Asomugha because the stats and the majority of the sports world would call me crazy. However, as far as value, I believe Houston played this perfectly. The Texans still get a top 10 cornerback, spent less money than they would have for Nnamdi, and get a younger player as well.

At 27 years old, Johnathan Joseph has tallied 263 tackles, 14 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns in his five year career. Joseph was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals 24th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft from the University of South Carolina.

Overall I grade this transaction as an "A" for the Texans. Houston was able to get a great player, and didn't break the bank so that they can continue shopping in this free agency period to address other team needs.

Lockout Nears End As Players Meet In Washington

(AP PHOTO/SUSAN WALSH)

It was in Atlanta in 2008 where NFL owners voted to option out of their collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA. Now again, it's in Atlanta, where maybe as soon as Thursday, owners could vote to agree to a new C.B.A. that will end the lockout and restore the business of the National Football League. Meanwhile, the players’ side would present the agreement to player reps for all 32 clubs, who would vote on whether to recommend the settlement to the plaintiffs in the Brady et al v. National Football League et al lawsuit. The player reps were meeting today in Washington, D.C., where a vote is expected to take place once they see a document to review. The next step could be the recertification of the union, which requires all 1,900 players to vote, a simple majority to pass, and which will probably be done by e-mail or conference call.

Commissioner Roger Goodell and and nine of the 10 members of the owners' labor committee gathered at an airport hotel, also today, to go over the final terms of a settlement that lawyers have been hashing out for weeks, with the final touches having been worked on through late Tuesday night.

Sharks Handle Kings In Overtime For Game 1

(Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

The atmosphere was loud and proud in the sold out HP Pavilion in San Jose as their Sharks beat the L.A. Kings 3-2 in overtime in Game 1 of the NHl Western Conference Quarterfinals.

San Jose Forward Dany Heatley scored quickly with the games first goal in the first 28 seconds of the game. The Sharks as a team owned the first period on offense and defense with superb puck play by all four Sharks' lines.

With a very active second period for scoring, we saw a total of 3 goals, two by the Kings and one by the Sharks, to tie the game up at 2 a piece. L.A.'s goals came from Dustin Brown on the power play and late in the second period by Justin Williams, who had an assist on the goal by Brown.

Neither team could take control in the third period as this clash of California rivals went to overtime. With a number of shots on target for the Kings, they couldn't capitalize as San Jose Forward Joe "The Big" Pavelski came through once again in the clutch with a beautiful wrist shot to win it for the Sharks 3-2 in overtime.

2011 NCAA Tournament Preview

The brackets are set and the tournament is upon us. Whether you’re a basketball geek like myself, a casual sports fan, or someone who doesn’t watch any pre-march college basketball, chances are you are participating in at least one bracket pool. After all, the brackets are a major part of what makes March great. With that in mind, I have provided a brief preview of the regions complete with my upset specials, sleepers, Elite 8 and Final Four picks to help you fill out those brackets. Enjoy.

EAST REGION

Upset special: Marquette over Xavier – 13 of Marquette’s 14 losses come against teams in the NCAA tournament and they have several top 25 wins. Xavier’s best win is over Temple and it took triple OT for them to beat Wofford. They also have losses to Miami-Ohio, Charlotte, and Dayton.

Potential Sleeper: Syracuse – Syracuse is an experienced well-coached team that could definitely upset a much younger and extremely vulnerable North Carolina team. They are a dangerous matchup for Ohio State as well because they will be tough to defend and could get the Buckeyes into foul trouble forcing them to reach into their shallow bench.

Elite 8 Picks: Syracuse and Ohio State

Final Four Pick: Ohio State – While Syracuse could present problems for Ohio State, I expect the Buckeyes to step up to the challenge and make it to Houston. Thad Matta’s team is simply too balanced and should dominate the paint against an undersized Syracuse team.

Other Games of Note: George Mason-Villanova – This is about as close as you can get to a lock in the 8/9 game. George Mason was a popular pick to advance to the Sweet 16 before getting matched up against Ohio State in the second round and Villanova is limping in to the tournament, having lost 10 of its last 15 games including their conference tournament opener.

WEST REGION

Upset special: Missouri to the Sweet 16 – The Tigers have had more than their fair share of problems away from home this season, but they play a frenetic style of defense that can cause all kinds of problems for unfamiliar opponents in a one-game scenario and they benefit from a favorable draw. Cincinnati averages less than 70 points a game and only has one win over a healthy top 25 team. Meanwhile, the Tigers would be facing a UConn team that just finished playing 5 tough games in 5 days – teams who have accomplished similar feats in the past have not fared well in the tournament. This is where the Tigers relentless full court press could really take its toll on the Huskies. I like Missouri to make it to the Sweet 16.

Potential Sleeper: Texas – Don’t be fooled by the fact that the Horns struggled a little bit down the stretch and got hammered in the Big 12 Championship game. The Big 12 was an underrated league this year and the Jayhawks are a national title contender. Texas has size inside, shooters outside, playmakers everywhere, and they are capable of playing the best defense in the country. Their depth and athleticism will cause problems for everyone they face, including a potential matchup with Duke.

Elite 8 Picks: Texas and San Diego State

Final Four Pick: Texas – See my notes above. Bottom-line: I think Texas is too deep and athletic for a Duke team that struggles with overly athletic ball clubs and I think the Horns are ready to make a run to be a virtual host in Houston. The game against the Aztecs should be a great one as SDSU is every bit as athletic as Texas. The difference in that game should be Texas’ size down low. BYU had no problem with the Aztecs when they had Center Brandon Davies but got hammered without him. Tristan Thompson and Gary Johnson should do work against the Aztecs in the paint and lock up a Final Four berth for the ‘Horns.

Other Games of Note: Penn State-Temple – This is a good 7/10 matchup to look at for an upset. Temple is a good team and should win this game, but Penn State is capable of playing great defense and can really slow the game down. The Nittany Lions also have beaten Michigan State and Wisconsin twice each and played to within three points of both Ohio State and Purdue this season. Temple should win this game, but Penn State is capable of taking them out of their game and forcing them to grind it out, a style Penn State excels in.

SOUTHWEST REGION

Upset Special: Morehead State to the Sweet 16 – This one could make or break my bracket. Louisville is a trendy sleeper pick in this region and are certainly capable of making a run. However, the Cardinals don’t rebound very well and are undersized down low. This will present matchup problems for them as they face a Morehead State team that has the NCAA’s all-time leading rebounder in Kenneth Faried. I like the Eagles to upset Louisville and a shaky Vanderbilt team who is overseeded at 5 before bowing out to Kansas in the Elite 8.

Sleeper: Purdue – Purdue plays great defense and are capable of slowing the game down where they are a very efficient team. I think their combination of defense and shooters will make for a tough matchup for Notre Dame and in a one-game scenario, they could be effective against the Morris twins of Kansas. Purdue’s biggest weakness though is its bench as the team only significantly plays 6 guys. This wouldn’t be a matchup problem for them though until a potential Elite 8 game against a very deep Kansas team.

Elite 8 Picks: Kansas and Purdue

Final Four Pick: Kansas – Too much depth and balance. The Jayhawks are the most efficient shooting team in the country and are in the top 5 in assists per game. They are outscoring opponents by almost 19 per game (most in the country) and they can play inside and out. Perhaps the thing to like most about this team in the tournament is that they have proven they can win when they don’t play well and can win games in the 60s or the 90s. They are easily the best team in this region.

Other Games of Note: Richmond-Vanderbilt – Richmond is outscoring opponents by almost 10 points per contest and come into the tournament having won their last 7 games. The Spiders have also beaten three teams in this tournament including Temple and Purdue. Vanderbilt on the other hand has lost almost every game against quality SEC opponents with the exception of a February win over Kentucky at home, which was later avenged by the Wildcats. Other than that, their best wins are over St. Mary’s who is not in the field and a November win against North Carolina, when they looked to be headed back to the NIT. Vanderbilt is an incredibly weak 5 seed and could very well lose to Richmond.

SOUTHEAST REGION

Upset Special: Belmont over Wisconsin – Okay, so this is probably not news to you as it seems as if the whole world is all over this pick, but here are a couple of things to like about this game. Wisconsin has struggled against mid-major teams in the tournament in the past and Belmont has size and balance as well as tournament experience. Finally, Wisconsin is coming off a game in which they lost 36-33. Yes, that’s right, they scored a total of 33 points in 40 minutes.

Potential Sleeper: Kansas State – In the last few weeks Kansas State has shown that they have the make-up of a Final Four team and are capable of winning four games easily. Unfortunately, they have also shown why they were a bubble team three weeks ago. If Kansas State is running their offense well and getting solid play out of Jacob Pullen, this is without question the most dangerous team in this bracket. Unfortunately, they are also capable of losing their opening game to Utah State.

Elite 8 Picks: Pitt and Florida – This is easily the weakest bracket and while there are a couple potential sleepers here, there really isn’t anything that should keep either of the top seeds from making it to the Elite 8.

Final Four Pick: Florida – While I do think Pitt is a better team than Florida, Im going with Florida over Pitt because of Pitt’s poor tournament history. Jamie Dixon has never made it past the Sweet 16 with the Panthers who have routinely underperformed in March. They are the weakest of the #1 seeds and in any other region, I wouldn’t have them making it this far. They are certainly capable of beating the Gators and making their first Final Four appearance, but Im going with Billy Donovan’s experience and a starting 5 that is completely intact from last year.

Other Games of Note: Utah State – Kansas State and Old Dominion-Butler – I mentioned earlier that while Kansas State could dispatch of the Aggies fairly easily, they are also capable of laying an egg. Utah State is would not be a bad upset pick here. I have Old Dominion advancing past Butler in every one of my brackets. It’s not as solid of a bet as George Mason/Villanova, but the Bulldogs have been wildly disappointing all year. Matt Howard is a solid player, but Butler is not nearly as good of a team as they were last year.

FINAL FOUR AND CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Kansas over Florida – Florida is extremely overmatched in this game. They do not have the depth, athleticism, or size to compete with Kansas. Kansas is a legitimate national title contender and the only way they lose this game is if they play poorly (which they have at times this season). Unfortunately, with the exception of a game against Texas the morning after the death of Thomas Robinson’s mother, Lisa, the Jayhawks have played their best in the biggest games. This should be no different.

Ohio State over Texas – Despite what is sure to be an overwhelmingly pro-Texas crowd, I expect Ohio State to continue their season of dominance and overcome what could be a classic fight against the Longhorns. Texas certainly has more depth than Ohio State and could really get the Buckeyes into foul trouble, which would be a major problem them. However, the Horns pride themselves on playing straight up in the post (no double teams) and this could be as much of a problem for them against Ohio State as it was against Kansas. If they do start double teaming Sullinger down low, that will open up things for Ohio State’s excellent shooters. This should be a great game, but the matchups favor Ohio State.

Kansas over Ohio State for the National Championship – Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Bill Self becomes the only coach in the tradition-rich history of Kansas Basketball to win two NCAA Tournament Titles! This is the game we have all been waiting for all season, pairing up the two obvious best teams in the country against one another. This should be an excellent game that goes down to the wire. Ohio State’s shooters will present problems for Kansas smaller guards on the defensive end, but the Morris twins should be able to neutralize Sullinger down low. I expect fouls to be a big part of this game as free throw shooting and depth will be keys to the game. Neither team has much of an advantage at the charity stripe, but Kansas has a major advantage in depth where the Hawks can go 8 or 9 deep. Kansas wins a close one and hangs another banner in historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

Cinderella is born in early, not late, March

March is a time for magic, last second shots, heart breakers, Cinderellas, and, above all else, madness. If you ask most sports fans what the best month in sports is, you won’t get many arguments against March. It is, after all, when the greatest sports championship of all takes place – the NCAA tournament. The Super Bowl may be the greatest single game in American sport, but the NCAA tournament is the most entertaining playoff of them all.

But that is only half of the greatness of March. What many sports fans overlook is the greatness of conference tournaments, specifically those of the ‘one-bid’ leagues like the MAAC and C-USA. While 68 teams get into ‘the big dance’, all 347 NCAA Division I basketball teams start playing for the National Championship in March. No other sport on any level is as inclusive as college basketball and that is what makes March so magical.

And yet, many of us don’t pay attention to the conference tournaments, or if we do, we watch the biggies like the ACC, Big East, or Big 12 tournaments. These tournaments will, no doubt, provide some excellent basketball and a chance to see a plethora of contenders compete against one another. But often times these tournaments lack the same electricity, urgency, or magic of the one-bid leagues. Just about every year there is a surprise winner from one of the major conferences and, often times, it’s a team that HAD to win to get into the NCAAs. But this is ALWAYS the case in the one-bid leagues and that creates an atmosphere that is unrivaled by anything other than the big dance.

If there was ever an example of the magic and excitement of these tournaments, one need look no further than last night’s games. Last night 4 more tickets to the NCAA tournament were punched – Gonzaga, Wofford, St. Peter’s, and Old Dominion all won their conference tournaments. Gonzaga won the WCC in a great game against St. Mary’s and while both teams may still receive bids, you could see the desperation of both to get the automatic bid in the game. After all, a surprise winner from one of the major conferences could steal their spot in the blink of an eye – a fact not missed by the two competitors.
Old Dominion punched their ticket at the expense of Virginia Commonwealth last night by winning the CAA Tournament in a highly contested matchup. ODU beat VCU by 5 points, ending VCU’s magical run to the championship. VCU had already beaten tournament favorite, and possible at large team, George Mason just to get to the championship where Rams fought back from an 18 point deficit to pull within a point with just over 4 minutes left to play. And then their dreams of glass slippers and dancing were crushed as ODU won the contest, 70-65. Heartbreak for VCU, exhilaration for ODU.

In the SoCon Championship, College of Charleston was feeling good about their chances of punching their first ticket to the big dance since 1999 when they were leading by 4 at half-time. Then came the heartbreak as Wofford outscored the cougars by 14 in the second half to continue their run at a national championship. Despite losing both regular-season meetings with the Cougars, Wofford can keep its Cinderella dreams alive for at least one more week. But that’s the magic of March.

And then there is St. Peter’s. The Peacocks (that’s right folks, the Peacocks) secured their first NCAA bid in 16 years by holding off Iona despite getting outscored in the second half. It took a 17 point performance from their forward, Jeron Belin, and a 15 point performance from their PG, Nick Leon, but St. Peter’s is dancing again…finally. As the fourth seed in their conference tournament, the Peacocks had to beat the 1 and the 2 seeds in order to keep their Cinderella dreams alive, a feat which seemed extremely unlikely last week. But that’s the magic of March.
Cinderellas are born in March, but not in the NCAA Tournament. They are born in their conference tournaments where everyone is fighting for their basketball lives. Sure, there will be some great games, unlikely upsets, and incredible highlights in the major conference tournaments (which start with the Big East today, by the way). But if you missed last night’s games, or any of the mid-major tournaments, you’ve missed out on some of the magic that makes March the greatest month in sports.

Houston Loses Another Heartbreaker in Overtime

The Houston Texans keep on finding new and creative ways to lose football games as they lost a heart breaker at home on Monday Night Football in overtime 34-28. Houston was down 21 points early in the third quarter after a Ravens' kickoff return for touchdown to begin the second half. In classic Texans' fashion, Matt Schaub and company orchestrated 2 late 4th quarter 90+ yard touchdown drives including a 2-point conversion to tie the game at the end of regulation.

Baltimore won the coin toss in overtime and elected to receive, but the Texans' defense came up with the big stop and forced a Raven punt. Once again, the Texans had to start deep in there own territory. Unlike in their 4th quarter drives, that had them deep in their zone, the clock was not against them since it was a new quarter essentially and the score was tied. Yet, the Texans still play called like it was the 4th quarter and called two very risky pass plays which proved to be fatal as the second pass was intercepted and returned the short distance for a Ravens' touchdown and the game.

This is just another case on how Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak does not make great decisions under pressure when the game is on the line. the 2010 Houston Texans' are the only team in history to trail by 17 or more points to comeback to tie or lead in four games in a single season and still lose the game.

Since the merger, no head coach has ever received a sixth season after not making the playoffs the previous five. If Gary Kubiak is brought back next season by Texans' owner Bob McNair, then he is sending a clear message that he accepts mediocrity over winning.

Big Ten Football Breakdown

1. Ohio State- Ohio State looked spot on against Marshall. Prior has grown as a player and it shows. He had more control over the ball and took that defense apart. I am looking at Ohio to win big this year. Unless they somehow trip up along the way they are a shoe in for the Big 10.

2. Michigan- What happened to these guys? Ever since 2007 they have just been off the radar. The past two years have been losing seasons and I’m not seeing anything that makes me think they are going to do better. They have a few big names in the works recruiting wise but that won’t help them now. Rich had better turn this team around or he is out after this year. At least that’s how I see it.

3. Michigan State- Michigan State is coming off a losing season, but looking at their early non-conference schedule they can get a few early wins in. They do go up against Notre Dame but that doesn’t mean anything right now. They could easily have a winning season or at least end up 6-6 with a bowl game.

4. Wisconsin- The Badgers can easily have a seven win season. Their non-conference schedule looks to be a breeze. Team that up with what looks to be some easy conference wins, i.e. Northwestern and the likes. An easy run that could become a trip to the Rose bowl if Ohio State slips up.

5. Minnesota- Not everyone can have a great year. I think Minnesota falls into that category in the Big 10. I want to say that depending on the outcome of their USC game will set the tone for the rest of their season.

6. Penn St.- Coming in this year at #19 Penn State has a big challenge in week two. I don’t expect them to come away with a win. With all the other talent around the conference they are up there with the others. I still see them coming in behind Ohio State.

7. Purdue- Based on last year Purdue looks to be the whipping boy of the Big 10. A losing season last year doesn’t make it look good for them this year.

8. Illinois- Someone has to come in last and it most definitely will be a race to the bottom between Purdue and Illinois.

9. Iowa- Iowa is looking good and they are coming off a great season. If they can keep their momentum going in this year they are looking at a solid big 10 finish.

10. Indiana- Maybe Indiana will get lucky this year. With what looks to be an easy non-conference schedule and the games against Purdue and Illinois, they might come out with 6 wins this year.

11. Northwestern- The Wildcats had a decent season last year and they dodge a huge bullet this year by not having to play Ohio State. Now if they can only slip by Iowa, Penn State and Wisconsin.

PAC-10 Football Breakdown

1. Washington State- Will this be Washington State's to make it back to the glory days of the early 2000’s? Somehow I doubt it. Looking at the numbers they put up last year they shouldn’t be expecting a great season. Last year they managed to come up with one win. They were 0-5 against Top 25 and had to go to overtime to beat SMU. This year they are looking at 3 Top 25 teams along with some who ended last year ranked. In short Washington State is looking at another bad season.

2. Washington- With their pre-season Heisman candidate Jake locker at the helm, Washington seems to be going in the right direction. That would be great if Locker was going to be around for another season or two. Last year the Huskies ended the season 5-7 overall and 2-3 against Top 25 teams. This year looking over their schedule they might have too much to worry about, but in my opinion the biggest team they play will be Nebraska. Honestly if they win that game it would be a winning season in my eyes.

3. Oregon- I never have been a fan of Oregon ever since 2006. But one can’t deny that they have talent. They have been on the radar of the top 25 for the past few years. I like their chances in the Pac-10. Right now there is no one team who look to dominate. I am gonna keep an eye on Oregon this year.

4. Oregon State- While Oregon State didn’t fare so well against top 25 last year, they have a great chance to change the landscape of the BCS games. While they might not look great right now, their next three games can carve the path towards the National Championship.

5. California- Cal had a good year last year and it doesn’t seem to have any major road blocks in their way. They could easily have another 8-5 season and with the way USC’s defense looks they might put a run against Oregon.

6. USC- When last season ended I for sure thought the sports press world’s crush on USC was over. It was a season that was far under the normal standards for a Pete Carroll team to have. Then over the off season, they obtain a new coach along with sanctions handed down keeping them from bowl games. Although the major thing that would hurt them in the polls was the ability for juniors and seniors to transfer with out losing eligibility.

7. UCLA- When was the last time UCLA was a major contender in the Pac-10? Well that doesn’t matter. This year might be the year they take down USC just like 2006.

8. Stanford- Coming off a great year I doubt Stanford will be competing for the Pac-10. While it won’t be a bad season they just don’t have the stuff to make it all the way.

9. Arizona- Nowhere to go but up. Mike Stoops brought a winning attitude with him. He has led the Wildcats to two straight bowl games and will make it a third this year. Looking at their schedule, I would say around 4 to 5 losses.

Arizona State- Arizona State goes up against 4 top 25 teams. They didn’t exactly fare well against the top 35 last year going 0-4. And to the best of my knowledge they haven’t added any weapons to their arsenal.

Pollard Emerges As Defensive Leader

(AP Photo)

For an athlete that was released by the Kansas City Chiefs and was on the street at the beginning of last season, Texans' Safety Bernard Pollard has come a long way and ascended to the role of defensive leader in Houston.

you will definitely not find a more vocal and outspoken player on either side of the ball than Bernard Pollard. Whether you are and offensive or defensive player, his immense smack talk will reach you on a positive or negative note. At the Texans' Training Camp, you always know where Pollard is. He very much makes his presence known, again both positively and negatively to the recipient of his swagger.

Bernard Pollard holds everyone on the Texan' defense for everything that they do. With the development of Houston's young cornerbacks, this trait of Pollard's has become an invaluable asset. Last season Pollard took over with hard hits and great coverage that yielded him 4 interceptions. Pollard plans to continue his hard-nosed attack on this season's opponents, especially in the hitting department. on SportsRadio610 in Houston, Pollard stated, "if you don't want to give us respect, we'll take it." When asked about the toughness of him and the Texans' defense, Pollard replied, "I'll be the first on to take the fine" and "I promise you I will hit you just to let you know that I'm gonna set the tone, we are gonna set the tone, the Houston Texans' are gonna set the tone."

This passion and this fire has been missing from this team in my opinion. With leaders and attitudes like this, The Houston Texans' defense is going hard to score on this season.

Last Ditch Effort For Clemency?

On Monday, Houston Texans' owner Bob McNair flew to New York City to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The meeting was a "last ditch" effort for McNair to get his Pro Bowl Linebacker, Brian Cushing, back on the field for week one after being suspended for 4 games for use of performance enhancing drugs.

According to sources, Bob McNair presented new evidence and scientific data to Roger Goodell, that wasn't available to them in the spring, in hopes of getting this suspension reduced or overturned.

After morning practice on Monday, Brian Cushing stated that the new evidence had to deal with "Over-trained Athlete Syndrome", which most people including myself of the sports world have never heard of. But you know what, I'm not a doctor, I can just give my opinion. I guess we will have to wait and see in the coming weeks and see if the water holds with Cushing and McNair's claims.

Houston Texans' Training Camp

(SportsEyez.com Photo)

It was a sweltering hot Sunday just for a sportswriter like myself. Saying that, you can imagine how it was for the gladiators of the grid iron in 95 degree heat and 89% humidity running drills and practice. However, even with the adverse weather conditions, these elite men performed at a high level throughout the practice.

We talked with linebacker Xavier Adibi about his impending increased role with the first team as starting strong side linebacker for the first four games of the regular season. As of now, Adibi looks to be the starter while strong side linebacker Brian Cushing serves his 4 game suspension for a positive PED test last season. When I asked him about being the starter, Adibi replied "I'm definitely ready and it feels good. I love to play ball, it's unfortunate what happened to Cushing that led for me to step up but I'm ready to play ball."

Wide Receiver Andre Johnson did not disappoint as he made his catches with precision and poise. It seemed as though Johnson picked out every discrepancy in the very youthful Houston secondary. Rookie and 1st round pick, CB Kareem Jackson, has been matched up against Andre Johnson and has been burned every time. Defensive leader and Strong Safety Bernard Pollard tells Jackson how and what he is doing wrong in his coverage and at his position. It's great to see Pollard talking to and challenging everyone on the field, both offense and defense. Pollard has clearly emerged as the defensive leader on this team since his acquisition last fall.

The Texans have 6 tight ends at training camp this season, with 2 of them on the Physically Unable to Perform List (PuP). Rookie tight end Garrett Graham has definitely impressed me the most, especially with his catching ability. On Sunday, Graham had an extraordinary one handed catch with his left hand that was over thrown. That kinda of hustle and determination I believe will land him a place on the 53-man roster at the conclusion of training camp.

The Texans from Houston looked sharp all around, poised, and determined for a deep playoff run this season. Keep checking back for more updates.

Manchester United Sticks It To The MLS All Stars

In a crowd of over 70,000 people, the 2010 MLS All Star game was definitely a spectator's delight. With big names and high scoring, the crowd was loud with excitement as Manchester United defeated the MLS All Stars 5-2.

The match was a predicted lop-sider and did not disappoint. Manchester United scored 2 goals in the first half and 3 goals in the second to prove their dominance in the world. Federico Macheda scored the first 2 goals for the Reds and earned himself the game's MVP. Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez also scored a goal in the 84th minute in is Manchester United debut.

This is the largest MLS All Star team loss to date to an international opponent. However, the MLS All Stars did show up in the second half as they netted 2 goals by Brian Ching of the Houston Dynamo and Dewayne De Rosario of Toronto FC. MLS Superstar Landon Donovan didn't hit the pitch until the 74th minute and had little impact on the match.

Hosting Manchester United did a lot for this sport in the United States, but they still have far to go at this point. From the spectator's point though, it was a great match and entertaining till the final whistle.
